Birdseye Maple, also known as bird’s eye maple, is a highly prized and distinctive wood. Here is a detailed introduction:   Botanical Characteristics   Birdseye Maple is not a distinct species of maple but rather a growth anomaly. It is almost exclusively harvested from hard maple, specifically Acer saccharum. The name comes from the tiny, rounded “eyes” scattered across its surface. These “eyes” are actually small knots, which are believed to be formed when the tree attempts to start new buds in response to unfavorable growing conditions. The tree tries to grow new shoots to get more sunlight, but the shoots are aborted, leaving behind the characteristic birdseye figure.   Distribution   It is native to northeastern North America, with a large supply coming from trees growing in the Great Lakes region of Canada and the United States, as well as some varieties in the Rocky Mountains.   Physical Properties   Density and Hardness: The average dried weight of Birdseye Maple is about 44.0 lbs/ft³ (705 kg/m³), and its Janka hardness is 1,450 lbₓ (6,450 N), indicating that it is a relatively dense and hard wood. Grain Pattern: Its grain pattern is unique, with the birdseye figure being most noticeable on flatsawn pieces of lumber. The “eyes” are usually 1⁄8 to 3⁄8 inch (0.32 to 0.95 cm) wide, and the frequency and size of these “eyes” can affect the value of the wood.   Uses   Birdseye Maple is widely used in high - end applications. It is often made into veneers for luxury furniture, such as drawer fronts, table tops, and chair backs. It is also popular in the production of musical instruments, such as guitars and bowed instruments, as well as in automobile trim, custom rifle stocks, pool cues, jewelry boxes, and decorative canes.   Value   Due to its rarity and unique aesthetic appeal, Birdseye Maple is usually more expensive than ordinary hardwood, sometimes costing several times as much. Items made from it are not only valued for their functionality but also for their artistic and collectible value.
